The one word answer to this question is yes. Although Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a new martial art it has taken the industry by storm becoming the most popular martial art in America. Just drive around your neighborhood and you should be able to see new Jiu Jitsu schools opening up everywhere. The main reason this is happening is because it has been proven that Bjj has done something no other martial art has done before. It has taught you to defeat the bigger man in a fight as a smaller man with technique over power and strength.
You must understand Bjj comes from Judo. So these 2 martial arts may have many similarities but judo teaches you throws, and that's where Bjj comes in because it teaches you finishes. You may ask, does Jiu Jitsu help you defend against a street fight? Of course it does. Let's just say that some thug decides to try to punk you at the park and take your money. While you refuse he just starts punching you. Well if you know Jiu Jitsu you would simply duck under take him down and the poor guy won't know what to do off his back which will make him panic. This is where you can either decide to punch him and knock him out or just hold him in position and try to reason with him. Or simply hold him down and have someone calls the cops if he is a thief.
Many understand the answer to this question now because of what Royce Gracie has done. He fought in the first few UFC's where it was held tournament style, which means you fight more than 1 fight in a day. Back around this time it was more style vs. style that was fighting and you would see matches like boxing vs wrestling match or Judoka vs karate guy. Well Royce Gracie also fought in this competition and was the only pure Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter and won every single fight of his by submission within only a couple of minutes, if that. He made a big statement which shocked the world, and you must remember back then there were no weight classes. There was only one weight class, so Royce Gracie using the power of Jiu Jitsu defeated guys over 100 pounds heavier than him proving to the world that with the power of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you can defeat any man no matter his size.
