The student of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu type of martial arts would like to know the difference between a Bjj Gi and a Judo Gi. At the outset it can be said that both of them look similar but with some differences. What are these differences that have to be taken into account especially by a competitor who would like to participate in the Brazilian Ju Jitsu competition?
Not only the competitors but even the beginners in the martial art of Jiu Jitsu should know the basic differences between a Bjj Gi and a Judo Gi. Bjj Kimonos have everything light about it. In fact, Jiu Jitsu Gi has three main types to select from as far its gear is concerned. The three types are single weave, double weave and the gold weave Gis. Though the Gis related to Bjj and Judo are loose in their making, the Jiu Jitsu Gi is tighter when compared to the Judo Gi. This is due to the fact that there is a difference in the techniques of combat between BJJ and Judo types of martial arts. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu involves more of grappling and ground work where as Judo is all about throwing. Hence the jacket of the gear of Bjj is made in such a way that the opponent would not be easily in a position to hold you. Hence the tightness about the Bjj Kimonos is understood to be for obvious reasons. Judo Gi is not tight at all for that matter since the opponent should feel the ease when it comes to throwing you off. There is another difference between the Gis of Bjj and Judo. The sleeves of a Judo Gi are much wider when compared to that of a Jiu Jitsu Gi. This is to facilitate better gripping of the opponent in the case of the martial art of Judo.
The Judo Gi is provided with more material for the opponent to hold on to where as the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi is not provided with more material for the opponent to hold easily on to. The Bjj Gi would normally be tighter at the cuffs of the pants and jackets. But for these differences there are not very many differences between the Judo Gi and the Brazilian Ju Jitsu Gis. It is interesting to note that the International Judo Federation is strict regarding the guidelines for the Gi to use in competitions where as the International Brazilian Ju Jitsu Federation has some relaxation when it comes to the guidelines for the Gi to use in their competitions. The Bjj Gi meant for Jiu Jitsu is less expensive when compared to the one meant for Judo. This is because of the fact that the lighter variety of single weave is preferred more in the combats of the Bjj. The opponent finds it easy to handle. The one disadvantage of this type of the Bjj Kimonos is that it is prone to wear and tear than the double and the gold weave types of the Bjj Gi.
